Working closely with the Senior Director of Government Relations, the Associate Director will have the opportunity to help shape and advocate SIA’s policies on compelling issues that impact millions of Americans each day including, but not limited to, cyber security and data privacy, school security, consumer use of technology, government procurement, and homeland security.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Government Relations, the Associate Director is a proactive communicator with a natural ability to take initiative at work, a problem solver who can work creatively and independently. The ideal candidate has experience working with a broad spectrum of stakeholders including outside consultants, association members, internal colleagues, government staff, and like-minded association representatives within coalitions.
The right candidate has experience as a staff member for a federal or state elected official, or previous experience lobbying and researching public policy issues for a trade association. This potential team member will have a pro-industry outlook and enjoy learning new issues, working with SIA members to seek out opportunities to positively influence the legislative and regulatory climate, and be driven to ensure that SIA is represented in the policy discussions that matter most to our industry. The individual will share a commitment to SIA’s core values consisting of these principles: a member-driven focus, knowledge, and innovation, teamworking and collaboration, DE&I, and accountability and integrity.
The position’s primary responsibility is to help formulate and advocate for SIA’s policy positions on issues including cyber security, data privacy, government procurement, federal appropriations and grant policy, consumer technology, and workforce development. The candidate will interact with Members of Congress and staff with respect to assigned issues areas and contribute as needed to state advocacy efforts. They will also have responsibility for development of the annual SIA Government Summit conference in collaboration with other SIA departments, and other educational and outreach events supporting SIA objectives.
Other responsibilities include providing strategic counsel toward lobbying strategies, managing the agenda of assigned working groups and committees, serving as a liaison on public policy matters to SIA’s advisory boards, and drafting persuasive fact sheets, position papers, presentations, letters to government officials, and concise member updates.
SIA offers a competitive total compensation package that includes medical and dental insurance, a generous leave program, 401(k) employer contribution, transit benefits, a casual work environment, and the opportunity to work remotely upon eligibility for up to three days each week.
A bachelor’s degree and least three years of relevant experience are required. Advocacy experience on business and/or technology policy issues, and experience working on Capitol Hill, in a state legislature, or in government relations for a trade association are preferred. Exceptional research, writing, editing, and organizational skills are a must. A willingness to register as a federal lobbyist and potentially as a state lobbyist, is essential. Event planning experience is a plus.
