Part-time Executive Director
The American Society of Health Economists (ASHEcon) is a professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence in health economics research in the United States. ASHEcon provides a forum for emerging ideas and empirical results of health economics research. ASHEcon is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of a highly distinguished group of health economists from all parts of the United States.

Through a set of professional activities, ASHEcon aims to advance health economics research in the United States, to achieve widespread recognition for the field of health economics and to enhance individual and societal health by providing evidence and expertise for the development of private and public policies.
ASHEcon is seeking a part time Executive Director. The Executive Director is the Chief Operating Officer of the American Society of Health Economists (ASHEcon) and directs all operations and strategy setting for the organization. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the organization's achievement of its mission and financial objectives. The Executive Director is a ex officio non-voting member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee and an ex officio non-voting member of all other ASHEcon committees.
The Executive Director is responsible for conference planning, leadership and administration, budget and finance, communications, assisting the board with program development and strategic planning, staff supervision, and overseeing day to day operations.
ASHEcon is currently managed by the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM). APPAM is a non-profit research organization and ASHEcon and APPAM share some members in common. In addition, both organizations engage in similar activities in support of their mission, including annual conferences, webinars, publication of top research journals and professional development activities for its junior members and students. ASHEcon has contracted with APPAM since 2017 to provide administrative support and help with conference planning, marketing, communications, award administration, governance activities and all other ASHEcon activities. The ASHEcon Executive Director would be expected to work closely with the full-time APPAM Program Manager staff assigned to ASHEcon.
The Executive Director position is a part-time position with an estimated time commitment of 10 hours a week.
Below is a non-exhaustive list of activities the successful candidate would be expected to be engaged in. The successful candidate should be a diligent administrator with experience working with boards of all sizes. The position requires deft multi-tasking, prioritization, comfortability with conference planning (particularly academic conference planning), and familiarity with how small but busy non-profit associations work.
Attend in-person all ASHEcon-sponsored conferences
Work with the ASHEcon Board, officers, and any relevant conference committees to assure high quality conferences;
Assist the President-Elect and work with the ASHEcon conference committee on conference planning, including identifying possible conference sites, negotiating terms for use of facilities, developing and assembling a conference schedule and program, and identifying and inviting program chairs and plenary speakers for conferences at which ASHEcon is a participant, including but not limited to the ASSA and iHEA conferences; and
Assist actively in the identification and solicitation of sponsors and contributors to the conference, including writing grant applications if appropriate.
Program Development and Administration Assist the Board with identification of strategic goals, and development and implementation of a strategic plan, and ensure there is consistent and timely progress toward stated objectives;
Work with the President to plan and execute Board meetings;
Work on membership recruitment, retention and management, including both individuals and organizations.
Attend all ASHEcon Board meetings;
Oversee board elections and work with the Nominating Committee to implement board recruitment;
Manage all committees, including assisting the board with recruitment for those committees as directed by the Board. These include all currently constituted committees of the Board and other committees that may be formed in the future;
Promote active and broad participation by volunteers as directed by the Board;
Jointly, with the President, Treasurer, and Secretary of the Board of Directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.
Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations;
Forge and maintain relationships with agencies, organizations, and other scientific societies as directed by the Board, including iHEA, HERO, AEA, APPAM, etc.
Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices.
Work with the staff, Treasurer, and the Board in preparing a budget, and see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
Actively lead efforts to solicit membership fees and obtain organizational sponsors for the association, and work with the board to set rates for the conference and membership.
Ensure compliance with all state and federal tax filings, plus ensures audits of financial records.
Communications and Marketing
Facilitate external communications of ASHEcon, with the President serving as the chief spokesperson;
Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals, ensuring that official letters, emails, newsletters, promotional material and web site content meet a high professional standard;
Liaise with the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief on all matters concerning the American Journal of Health Economics (AJHE). AJHE is published quarterly by the University of Chicago Press.

Sponsor annual meetings at alternating locations in the U.S. to disseminate current research results and provide a gathering place for the exchange of ideas between academic and nonacademic health economists.
Create a web-page containing information on professional activities, job postings, member list, conference materials and relevant news items. Investigate the development of other information services.
Organize sessions at the AEA, iHEA and other appropriate conferences.
Develop and maintain ties with other relevant organizations
