APhA is seeking to hire a Senior Director for Books and Digital Publishing. This position will be responsible for planning and developing an editorial program consisting of books and digital products that align with APhA's mission, help pharmacists improve patient care, and maximize non-dues revenue for the Association.
Function 1: Planning and strategy
Develop strategic acquisition plans for digital, print, and other products that meet mission-critical information needs for members and others and meet P&L requirements.
Review and vet proposals for publish/don't publish decision.
Develop and negotiate author contracts and include projected budget (profit/loss analysis).
Screen for and warn of potential legal vulnerability of projects.
Develop, negotiate, and nurture profitable relationships with other publishers, including Elsevier, Pharmaceutical Press, and others; with digital vendors such as Atypon (PharmacyLibrary) and CoreSource (eBooks); and with distribution vendors.
Stay current with trends in STM publishing and technology, act as brand ambassador for BDP, attend book fairs and other professional meetings to promote products, network with publishers, and collaborate with rights agent in securing licensing agreements.
Identify potential authors, develop relationships, and recruit new authors.
Work collaboratively with the APhA VP, Marketing on developing the annual publications promotion and sales plans, APhA exhibits, and digital platform programs.
Monitor, implement, and update contracts and agreements.
Create and update best business and publishing practices, including maintaining SOPs for all aspects of book and digital publishing.
Serve as liaison to APhA's Books and Digital Publishing Editorial Advisory Board. Stimulate and integrate recommendations from the Editorial Advisory Board on the department's future directions and projects, leverage board members expertise in developing the strategic acquisition plan, recruiting authors and peer reviewers, and promoting BDP's brand.
Function 2: Financial management
Develop the department's annual budgets and continuously monitor the department's performance compared with the budget.
Oversee the royalty process.
Oversee and monitor licensing, rights, permission revenue.
Instruct Finance annually on write-offs of unsellable inventory.
Instruct Finance to close out work-in-progress account for each book after project is complete and all invoices have been submitted and approved.
Update and monitor the contract database
Function 3: Editorial and production management
Ensure consistently high quality in the writing, the design, and production of print and eBooks, PharmacyLibrary, and marketing materials.
Manage the product development process for both books and digital material.
Oversee and monitor APhA's relationship with Atypon to ensure that they meet the Association's business and content requirements in a timely manner and provide APhA with the technical functionality required.
Work and coordinate with APhA staff and leaders to ensure that major upgrades to Atypon’s platform meets the association’s requirements, provide cost estimates for upgrades and customizations, ensure that APhA's other systems can be integrated with Atypon’s platform, and advise APhA staff about content that can be re-purposed or used for their programs.
Oversee the protection of APhA titles' copyrights.
Determine optimal reprint quantities when low inventory levels require reprinting of books.
Determine when APhA books go out of print.
Function 4: Staff Management
Recruit, instruct, and supervise department staff and external publishing project managers and personnel.
Recommend new or temporary staff as needed, as well as provide supporting financial rationale.
Draft annual goals and objectives for the department.
Conduct midyear and annual performance reviews of department staff.
Draft and update, as necessary, job descriptions of department staff.
Education required: Bachelor's degree, preferably in publishing, English, or journalism, pharmacy knowledge (preferred).
Experience required: 10 years of management experience in an STM publishing environment, preferably book and digital publishing.
Additional skills, knowledge, and abilities required:
Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communications skills.
Ability to prioritize and handle multiple work tasks effectively to meet tight deadlines.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Office 365, and Windows environment.
Understanding digital publishing platforms and XML (preferred).
