Founded in 1968, the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) is comprised of security, law enforcement and safety individuals dedicated to the protection of healthcare facilities worldwide IAHSS has over 2,000 members and trains and certifies more than 6,000 healthcare security professionals annually. The IAHSS Annual Conference & Exhibition has achieved record high attendance the last few years with over 550 attendees.
Located in Chicago, steps off of the Cumberland Blue Line stop, IAHSS is led by a 7 member Board of Directors, has a 6-person staff managing a wide range of activities and programs designed to help members in their professional careers. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors. Responsibilities include providing strategy and governance support to the board, managing programs and operations of the Association, leading and managing staff resources, and coordinating professional relations. The Executive Director serves as the Association’s key individual responsible for day-to-day implementation of IAHSS programs, services and the fulfillment of its strategic plan. Knowledge and/or familiarity with healthcare security is desired but not required. The role requires exceptional business acumen and communication skills as well as an entrepreneurial and servant leader mindset. This is an excellent opportunity for an Executive Director to build on the growth from new products and offerings that IAHSS has launched in recent years. The Executive Director will lead and be responsible for the following key strategic and operational areas of the association:
Board governance and engagement
Support the Board in developing and monitoring progress towards its strategic plan. Keep the Board focused on its vision and strategic priorities and ensure that volunteer resources and committees are aligned with the strategy for the association.
Develop and maintain the association’s policy and procedure manual.
Strategic visioning and support
Engage with the Board to develop and revise strategic plans annually with measurable goals.
Establish IAHSS as the trusted authority in healthcare security and safety.
Operational planning and development
Ensure that the operational infrastructure, including technology (AMS and LMS), processes and staffing model best support the goals in the strategic plan.
Develop and present an annual budget to the IAHSS Board that supports the strategic and operational plans of the organization.
Provide regular financial reports to the Board and an annual financial report for the membership.
Ensure proper legal and tax reporting.
Team leadership and management
Lead, motivate, coach, develop and oversee the staff team, including contractors Develop and organize job descriptions to best support the strategic direction of the organization.
Manage all HR functions including performance reviews, employee benefits and payroll.
Evaluate and refine the IAHSS member value proposition and seek and implement new ways to add and measure value to the members.
Establish ongoing and growing member offerings and programs that anticipate member needs in a changing healthcare environment.
Annual Conference & Exhibition
Build on the significant growth of the AC&E by engaging new members, evaluating the program offerings, and determining appropriate location, pricing and timing.
Training and certification programs
Work closely with the IAHSS Commission on Certification, Education Council, subject matter experts, and contracted instructional design consultants to develop and expand IAHSS’ training and certification programs.
Work with subject matter experts to perform reviews and updates to ensure the eLearning training and certification exams remain accurate and up to date with the profession.
Achieve and maintain NCCA accreditation of the Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) program.
Affiliations growth and development
Strengthen and grow affiliations with complementary associations and organizations.
Identify and prioritize opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing and cross promotion.
Sponsorship program development
Strengthen and support IAHSS sponsors and continuously seek new opportunities to engage sponsors and companies who are interested in supporting healthcare security professionals.
Marketing and Communications
Expand the influence of the association and communicate its value to members, partners and all constituents.
Continually raise brand awareness and further expand the growing social media presence. Develop and administer association publications and its website.
Chapter support and development
Support existing chapters and encourage the growth of new chapters.
Ensure proper set up of chapters and consistently communicate the core requirements of each chapter as well as the support offered to chapters by IAHSS headquarters.
Bachelor’s degree in related field; Master’s degree preferred.
CAE (Certified Association Executive) preferred.
Six to ten years of demonstrated experience in a leadership role, with an association. Emotional intelligence and demonstrated relationship management skills including:
Building and maintaining positive and effective relationships virtually and in person with individuals who are widely dispersed geographically
Demonstrating respect and consideration for various cultures and backgrounds and supporting and promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion
Strong project management, organizational, analytic, and communication (oral, written and presentation) skills.
Business acumen that includes strong financial management, budgeting skills and strategic marketing.
Strategic visionary with ability to act tactically, as required.
Excellent conceptual and critical thinking skills; ability to present ideas in a clear and compelling manner with strict attention to detail.
Ability to develop consensus within an organizational climate of collegiality and diverse operational activities.
A positive and energetic attitude toward serving our members is essential.
High level proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Experience with association management systems (i.e. YourMembership.com) and learning management systems is preferred.
Experience in website content development and online communities.
Some travel is required, which may include occasional weekends. Travel is anticipated to be 10-20% annually.
Background check is required for selected candidate.
The successful Executive Director must be a strategic and collaborative leader with a desire to innovate and develop consensus in close partnership with a member driven organization and volunteer leadership. The candidate must be prepared to create, sustain, and ensure synergistic association activities for and with a strategic business plan and possess high integrity, emotional intelligence, excellent people skills, and an ability to develop and manage successful relationships with members and constituents. He or she must have outstanding problem solving and interpersonal skills, as well as a strong personal presence, credibility, and ability to listen effectively.
