The Association for Psychological Science (APS), a DC-based scientific organization is seeking an experienced, highly motivated, analytical, and detail oriented individual to serve as Senior Director of Membership and Marketing.
The Senior Director of Membership and Marketing reports to the Executive Director and Deputy Director. Under their guidance, the Senior Director of Membership and Marketing leads all membership retention and recruitment efforts, and all marketing efforts for conventions and employment and commercial advertising. The position’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Effectively leading a team of membership and marketing professionals and engaging with colleagues across departments in the development, execution, and evaluation of promotional campaigns; supervising APS staff at multiple levels, potentially including directors, assistant directors, senior managers, managers, coordinators, and assistants on both the membership and marketing teams.
Developing and implementing effective strategies for member recruitment and retention, and successful comprehensive marketing plans for convention exhibitors, sponsors, and advertisers and for employment advertising.
Developing evaluations of membership and marketing activities; using the results to inform future strategies and approaches; reporting results to APS leadership.
Analyzing historical data to identify opportunities and trends for both membership and marketing outreach.
Developing creative print and digital promotions for use across a variety of programs, including conventions, journals, membership, and commercial and employment advertising sales.
Developing and adhering to an APS “brand” and ensuring consistency in messaging across the APS outreach tools and coordination across the APS products and departments.
Maintaining strong connection to the APS membership and ensuring that exceptional customer service is provided by the membership and marketing teams.
Conducting financial and budget analyses, including revenue forecasting, expense management, and account reconciliation.
Capitalizing on opportunities and developing plans to identify and engage with new members as well as new sponsors, exhibitors, and advertisers.
Maximizing non-dues revenue from exhibit, advertising, and sponsorship sales and identifying opportunities for new non-dues revenue streams, including product development.
Overseeing outside consultant responsible for non-dues revenue sales, including exhibits, advertising, and sponsorships.
At least 7 years of experience working in membership and/or marketing for a non-profit academic/educational/scientific member-based organization; equivalent experience will be considered.
A minimum of 3 years in a leadership role, director or higher.
Experience with strategy, creation, and performance analysis for recruitment, retention, and other promotional activities.
High-level experience with data management and analysis, and use of data to inform marketing strategies and activities.
Financial analysis experience, including revenue and expense monitoring and reconciliation and budget development.
Demonstrated ability to lead a team of membership and marketing professionals.
Experience working collaboratively across departments, and with organization leadership.
Experience working with volunteers at a variety of levels.
Extremely strong attention to detail.
Stellar written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel and Access).
Familiarity with membership database software.
Excellent analytical abilities.
Expertise in data-based decision-making and management
Keen understanding of direct marketing principles and their effective application.
Knowledge of psychological science a plus.
Basic understanding of HTML and SQL a plus.
Experience with AMS selection and migration a plus.
