Join the AMA team as the Director, Medical Student Section in Physician Engagement. The Medical Student Section (MSS) is the AMA’s primary policy-making and leadership development vehicle for engaging medical student members of the organization. The MSS Director is responsible for the long-term success of the Section and in that capacity (1) oversees Section planning and governance functions, (2) plans and directs the activities of the Section, and (3) serves as a center of expertise and point of contact for internal and external inquiries related to the medical Student Section. Other Responsibilities will include:
Leadership and Relationship Management and Development:
Guides the MSS Governing Council in the development and implementation of strategic plans aligned with department and AMA goals.
Builds, manage and sustains professional relationships with MSS Governing Council members and other Section leaders.
Provides strategic council to MSS leaders, advising them on and guiding them through relevant AMA policy, processes and procedures.
Identifies and facilitates implementation of leadership development opportunities for Section Leaders.
Represents the needs of the MSS to management, elevating concerns as appropriate.
Directs AMA staff and Governing Council, Regional, and Section Leaders in the planning and execution of Governing Council meetings, Annual/Interim meetings, Region meetings, and other Section events.
Directs the MSS policy-making process – from concept to policy.
Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) and primary point of contact within and outside the AMA for inquiries from or related to the medical student section. Collaborate with product experts to identify product and service gaps and to fulfill those needs and opportunities.
Interacts with the AMA Board of Trustees, other AMA business units, and relevant external organizations.
Facilitates all communications in a proactive manner between the AMA and Section members, and between Section leaders and their constituents.
Assist with the development of customer profiles and guidelines for segment messaging, test and implement programs and engagement opportunities.
Identifies and contributes to the implementation of opportunities to grow AMA membership through the MSS.
Staff Management Oversight:
Sources and select, develop and coach, reward and recognize, and optimize talent of all AMA employees assigned to the section.
Lead section to ensure collaboration and productive outcomes with other AMA, Physician Engagement, Member Programs, Governance and Policy employees.
Ensure proactive communication with all internal and external clients as well as AMA employees to ensure positive collaboration.
Manage budget and salary plans within guidelines.
Master’s degree in relevant discipline required.
Minimum 7 years of proven leadership experience in leading, influencing and interacting with external stakeholders required. Experience with managing medical, business, law school or professional graduate level student experience preferred.
Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and mentor staff required. Managing remote teams preferred.
Extensive experience in interpersonal leadership communications, policy research and report writing required.
Excellent writing, editing, presentation, and communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write a diverse range of material, develop well thought-out policy positions, and edit material prepared by other, required.
Prior knowledge of best practice governance processes preferred.
Excellent organization, prioritization, and management skills to handle a variety of multi-faceted projects in a fast-paced, high volume team environment, required.
Polished interpersonal, decision-making, and political skills to interface and communicate with all levels of leadership, staff, management, and build sustainable trusting relationships with members.
Travel (20%) and extended hours, nights and weekends as business demands dictate, required.
