The Membership Sales Representative contributes to SmithBucklin’s Business + Trade Practice’s success by promoting our clients, introducing prospective members to the advantages of joining an association within their industry and maintaining a positive member experience for increased member retention. Representing the majority of our client organizations, the Business + Trade team helps associations create value for the members by delivering strategy and thought leadership, networking opportunities, commerce solutions, education and certification, and advocacy and promotion.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to conduct in-depth research and find different avenues for approaching potential prospects in the market to increase membership and meet client goals and objectives. This is a goal-driven position that requires the ability to work independently, be self-disciplined and simultaneously balance the needs of multiple clients. The position will have high exposure to executives and board members and will require a strong professional presence and business acumen.
What You Will Do
Consistently look for new and creative ways to gain new members for client organizations through proactive research
Prospect for qualified leads through a variety of sources including the internet, volunteer customer lists, periodicals, directories and direct inquiries
Identify ways to communicate association benefits to prospects
Manage prospect database, including reporting of pipeline, updating records and adding new prospects
Build a network of contacts through prospecting and referrals
Use CRM tools to create custom membership proposals for outreach and follow-up with prospects
Develop and maintain relationships with current members
Represent associations in-person at industry events as needed
Manage membership inquiries and respond promptly
Provide analysis and consultation on existing membership materials and resources
Determine prospect’s goals and motivation; be knowledgeable of all client programs and services

College degree in sales, marketing or related field
3+ years of sales experience
Experience in a nonprofit and/or association environment
Experience working with membership organizations and/or community outreach
Excellent customer services skills
Results-oriented with demonstrated organizational and time management skills
Smart, creative and independent thinker with great attention to detail
Excellent writing, listening and verbal communication skills
Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
Ability to resolve conflicts in a professional, tactful manner
Able to work independently as well as part of a team
Ability to multi-task and learn quickly
Experience in CRM systems or other databases
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel)
