About the position:
The director of legislative affairs will lead the Institute’s federal legislative advocacy efforts, oversee the industry’s political action committee and build effective political engagement by the membership. This person will contribute to a dynamic, cross functional government affairs and policy team that develops and implements the association’s public policy objectives. This job will require time allocation of approximately 50% engagement with Capitol Hill and issues management, 25% association management (committee management, communications with broad membership, event support, internal operations), and 25% grassroots development.
Lead development and implementation of federal lobbying strategies, including: draft planning documents; create supportive materials such as issue briefs, statements, and letters; direct contact with legislators; coordinate with allied parties.
Participate in industry groups and coalitions focused on relevant federal policy goals. Lead coalitions on policy goals that are specific to frozen foods.
Lead a legislative affairs committee of member representatives. Engage member companies in setting legislative priorities and subsequent strategies to achieve identified goals. Communicate regularly with this committee through meetings, conference calls, written communications.
Collaborate with AFFI scientific and regulatory affairs and communications staff to develop programs and support initiatives to advance AFFI public policy advocacy agenda.
Regularly disseminate information to Association members on legislative and regulatory issues.
Foster strategic and meaningful relationships between AFFI member companies and their members of Congress to realize the grassroots potential of the industry. This includes leading the strategy and coordination of AFFI member engagement through a variety of means including an annual member fly-in, smaller targeted fly-ins, and visits by members of Congress to AFFI member company facilities outside of Washington, DC. Travel required. Track member engagement and status of relationships.
Work with the Senior VP of Industry Affairs to grow the FROZEN FOODPAC. Determine best practices for disseminating FROZEN FOODPAC funds to support members of Congress that support the frozen food industry
Experience in corporate government affairs and/or other trade association; Capitol Hill experience a plus.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic and tactical plans for utilizing Capitol Hill to achieve public policy objectives; appropriations experience a plus.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with association members, allied trade associations, congressional offices and government officials.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Experience building and leading coalitions.
Experience in political action committee fundraising and management.
Experience building high level relationships between members of Congress and their constituents.
Must be able to work independently yet also be effective and enjoy a team environment; must appreciate frozen food.
