The Vice President, Programs and Professional Development provides leadership for the design, development, implementation and evaluation of programs and professional development resources to support P-16 health education and physical education programs. Programs and professional development resources must be grounded in research, aligned with SHAPE America’s Strategic Direction, and developed with organizational fiscal sustainability in mind. A clear connection and relevance to SHAPE America’s public policy and advocacy work must be evident in the overall plans and goals established by this department, as well as a strong focus on membership value.
Nature and Scope of Work:
Develop and implement a master strategy for all professional development and programmatic work that aligns with the association’s Strategic Direction, is fiscally sound and grounded in research.
The overall strategy will include benchmarks and goals to measure progress and incorporate regular needs assessment and evaluation of programs (including convention program) to inform recommendation for improvement.
Strategy will incorporate input from other departments within the organization (especially membership and public policy/advocacy), the board, and program councils.
The strategy will also ensure programmatic support for overall direction, development and delivery of national convention, potential regional conferences and the PETE/HETE conference (which takes place every three years).
With support from the CEO, cultivate and grow key external alliances with organizations that complement the master strategy for professional development and programmatic work, and SHAPE America’s overall mission and goals.
Provide deep content expertise and draw upon a sound body of knowledge, core competencies and knowledge of standards to inform all professional development and programmatic work and to ensure SHAPE America’s relevance among the health education and physical education professions.
Demonstrate strong understanding of and utilize Instructional Design principles and adult learning theory to oversee the development of effective resources and materials, ensuring appropriate platforms and delivery mechanisms are employed.
Serve as a member of the senior staff and demonstrate strong leadership skills, including providing mentorship, professional growth opportunities and accountability for staff supervised.
Supervise and provide direction for vendors related to national convention, other events, workshops, online learning and relevant areas.
Proactively manage all department budgets, working with staff to achieve targeted revenue goals and maintain budgeted expense lines. Foster a culture within the team of identifying and implementing opportunities for new revenue streams that also advance SHAPE America’s mission and help grow membership.
Provide oversight for the management of SHAPE America’s volunteer membership structure, ensuring strong lines of communication are present, expectations regarding roles and responsibilities are clear, solid ideas are cultivated and explored, and that a high level of engagement and satisfaction is present amongst volunteer members.
Actively monitor and communicate to senior staff and key stakeholders about current knowledge related to healthy and active children to position SHAPE America ahead of national trends in education and public health.
Master’s degree in physical education, kinesiology, health education or related field strongly preferred. Ten or more years of demonstrated and progressive experience in related physical education, health education, physical activity, and program development required. Experience with volunteer management in an association setting is an asset. Requires strong communication skills, proficiency in relevant technology, project management, time management, and demonstrated management and supervisory ability.
