The Greater Washington Board of Trade ("Board of Trade") is the region's premiere membership organization representing a dynamic network of businesses, nonprofits and educational institutions across Greater Washington. The Board of Trade serves a vital role in convening and engaging the region's leaders in developing and advancing strategies to position Greater Washington among the best locations for (1) investment and business growth; (2) attraction, development and retention of a highly skilled workforce; and (3) fostering a high quality of life, particularly related to transportation, education and affordable housing.
To accomplish this agenda, the Board of Trade collaborates with the region's leaders to advance a robust public policy agenda in the District of Columbia, Suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia. Among the Board of Trade's priority issues are regional collaboration, transportation, smart cities, education, workforce development and protection of a pro-business environment. Further, the Board of Trade offers extensive programming throughout the year designed to support members to grow their businesses, gain access to thought leadership from the region's, as well as national industry experts, and share insights on critical issues with elected officials.
About the Region
Encompassing 6,000 square miles across the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and Suburban Maryland, the Greater Washington area is the 6th largest U.S. metropolitan area with a population of more than 6 million. The Board of Trade's 450 member companies employ 40 percent of the region's private-sector workforce, which are among the most highly educated in the nation.
The President & CEO will be a strategic, charismatic, and innovative leader who will build on the organization's strong legacy, while advancing its priority strategic objectives for the future. S/he will be a visionary leader who is responsible for the overall leadership and effective management of this $4 million organization. S/he will serve as an ambassador for the region and advocate on behalf of the Board of Trade's members to build a vibrant diversified economy across Metropolitan Washington.
Specifically, the President & CEO is responsible for the following:
Strategic Direction. In conjunction with the Board, develops and implements a long-range strategic plan for the Board of Trade. Facilitates and drives the development and successful implementation of the organization's vision and operational plans.
Economic Development. Defines the role of the Board of Trade as a leader in regional economic development, drives the vision and implementation of progressive development initiatives, and works in close collaboration with government agencies and regional business organizations to sustain and advance the regional economy.
Advocacy/Public Policy. In conjunction with the Board of Directors and relevant policy committees, identifies and prioritizes critical public policy issues and positions. Collaborates effectively with other organizations in advocating a pro-business agenda at the federal, state and local levels. This will be especially key as the region seeks to leverage its assets to diversify its economic base.
Community Leadership. Serves as a community leader, a visionary, and an alliance builder to ensure a vibrant economic environment and high quality of life for both employers and their employees. Engages with leading business executives in identifying partnerships opportunities surrounding emerging legislative issues to deliver relevant advocacy programs to serve the needs of the business community.
Spokesperson. Acts as the organization’s spokesperson through media interviews, speeches, meetings, briefings and programs, and includes relevant Board members in these activities, as appropriate. Operates with the highest level of integrity and represents the Board of Trade as the leading regional business organization with members of the broader community including: government officials, educational institutions, non-profits, community organizations, and other business groups.
External Relationships. Develops strong working relationships with a wide-range of constituencies, in both the public and private sector, to build and support coalitions consistent with the Board of Trade's overall mission and priorities to advance the region. Builds consensus across diverse regional entities. Convenes meetings and coalitions of regional and state organizations that share challenges and/or common goals. Represents the Board of Trade at appropriate civic, cultural, charitable, business, and community activities. Serves on boards, commissions, committees and organizations related to areas that are critical to the region. Attends key regional and political events as a representative of the Board of Trade.
Membership Development. Provides leadership to ensure there is a compelling value proposition and relevant offerings, programs and services for current and prospective members. Refines and applies recruitment and retention strategies that will help grow membership and increase the organization’s revenue.
Board Relations. Builds and maintains strong collaborative relationships with the Board of Directors. Ability to act as a servant leader, partnering with the Board of Directors to establish long range strategic focus on issues related to public policy, programs, and other key initiatives. Maintains regular and open communications with the Chairman and Executive Committee members. In collaboration with the Chairman and other senior officers, plans and organizes Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings on a regular basis.
Administration. Leads professional team of approximately 15 people who demonstrate a commitment to excellent member service and delivery of high-quality advocacy, programs and events. Attracts and retains a strong, motivated staff while developing future leaders for the Board of Trade. Develops and ensures a balanced budget annually that is aligned to the strategic goals of the organization. Works with staff and board to create and foster new entities to address emerging opportunities and challenges in the region such as the Potomac Conference.
The successful candidate will be a visionary, entrepreneurial, and results-driven leader with 10+ years of successful relevant experience. S/he will have a track record working in close partnership with a Board of Directors to develop and execute an organizational strategy. The successful candidate may have served in leadership roles in a nonprofit, for-profit and/or government organization.

An understanding of Federal, state and local governments, including a working knowledge of government affairs, issue position development, and advancing an agenda through the legislative and regulatory process.
Ability to work effectively on a bipartisan basis.
Experience attracting and retaining strong talent, and building and managing a high-performing team in a results-oriented and fast-paced environment.
Proven management, business, and financial acumen within an organization of similar or larger scale and complexity.
Successful record of growing top line revenue, establishing innovative sources of income, and driving sustainable growth.
